Becoming a Person of the Future (POTF) is a process of change deep within us, making us less selfish and more generous. It's a change from “MME-centered” living to “USS-centered” living. 

 

MME (pronounced "me") stands for three core human desires: 

• M ake our own decisions freely

• M inimize our pain

• E njoy life as best we can

These universal human desires differentiate humans from robots. We live as if these are our factory default settings, but Jesus says they are not. According to him, we have a different set of factory defaults that need to be restored so we can be truly human.

 

USS (pronounced "us") stands for this other set of defaults, three godly desires instilled in humans from the dawn of creation:

• U nafraid to engage with other people and with God

• S ense others’ pain and God’s pain

• S hare our stuff and ourselves

People of the Future are people in whom the USS defaults are being restored. MME people do have the USS desires, but the USS settings have been modified so they only come into play when MME desires are also met. MME desires rule MME people.

Jesus restores our true default settings (USS) when we open ourselves up to his influence and invite him to have his Spirit transform us from the inside out. Unfortunately there is no instant "Reset factory defaults" button.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Our MME settings are set at such a deep level in our subconscious that we can’t really understand them, let alone change them on our own. Consciously trying harder does not work no matter how long we keep at it. We still are who we are—MME people.

 

No acronym or analysis will ever provide what it takes to turn MME people into USS people. We have to be moved deep inside by a story. We have to see ourselves as part of this story, and it needs to be a story about a hero who can reset our inner settings for us. 

 

The liberating story of USS

 

Here is the story that will do just that. Jesus, the hero, came to earth with a messianic mission—to declare that the MME era had expired and the USS era was dawning. His heroic goal was and is global transformation, helping an USS future arrive to replace a MME past and present. 

 

How does Jesus move the world toward this goal? Not top-down through institutional power. His strategy is bottom-up, turning MME people into USS people deep inside. His Spirit mysteriously gets them into SYNC with the dawning glorious future, the Messianic Age.

 

Because of the story of Jesus, we realize that the MME approach to life has no future. For a long time it seemed completely normal for people to calculate their every move in light of their self-interest, but the “Age of MME” is over.

 

The future belongs to USS. Our job is to welcome the arriving future and to discover our new identity as USS people. The Spirit is gradually canceling the MME settings that took us on a detour from the path to our USS destiny. As the Spirit restores our factory default USS settings, we get back on the path through Jesus, the Future-bringer.
